S.T.I.N.A., Sistema Territoriale di Interesse Naturalistico-Ambientale “Monte Peglia e Selva di Meana” (Territorial System of Naturalistic-Environmental Interest) was formally instituted in 1999. It covers an area of over 45,000 hectares and includes 8 municipalities (San Venanzo, Parrano, Ficulle, Montegabbione, Fabro, Allerona, Castel Viscardo, Orvieto). There are three Protected Nature Areas (Regional Parks) in the system: Elmo-Melonta, Selva di Meana and Vulcani di San Venanzo. In its area of around 2,000 ha, the Regional Park of Elmo and Melonta includes the towns of Parrano, San Venanzo and Orvieto. Woods of great age-old holm-oaks alternate with impenetrable Mediterranean undergrowth (maquis), rivers and torrents where one can find botanical rarities such as Cytinus ruber, or birds such as the red kite (Milvus milvus), the short-toed eagle (Circaetus gallicus) and the eagle owl (Bubo bubo).
