Volcano of San Venanzo
The Volcanological Museum of San Venanzo was created to highlight the unique characteristics of the volcanic area.
The exhibits illustrate the geological and environmental significance of the eruption of the volcanoes of San Venanzo 265,000 years ago and prepare the visitor for an excursion to the Volcanological Park, a real open-air museum. The park extends over an area of around a dozen hectares and includes the remains of three miniature volcanoes where the peculiar aspects of the crater and the lava flow consisting of an absolutely unique rock known as venanzite can be observed.
With its collections of fossils, rocks and minerals, illustrative didactic panels and telematic equipment the guided tour of the Museum analyzes the phenomenon of volcanism and provides an insight into the geological and paleontologic history of Umbria. The volcanological nature trail winds along a pleasant short itinerary where one can observe the peculiar aspects of the volcanic cavity, the particular plant associations and fascinating views of the landscape.
The remains of an old quarry for mill stones bearing witness to the past quarrying of venanzite are also located along the train.
