Castles and TrufflesThe municipal territory is characterized by two historical centers: Fabro and Carnaiola. Driving north along the A1 toll highway in the stretch Rome-Florence, the former rises up on a height to the left, the latter occupies the hill on the right. An old fortified hamlet of medieval origins, Fabro was administered by Orvieto and shared the historical vicissitudes of the larger city. Unfortunately much of the historical documentation prior to the nineteenth century was destroyed when the Napoleonic troops set fire to the municipal archives. The only document remaining is the statute of the castle of Fabro dated May 25, 1548, drawn up by the feudal vassal, Filippo Pepoli. The town is dominated by the castle which was presumably built around the eleventh century and is characterized by an imposing structure, with a round tower facing north, walls and guard walks overlooking the splendid panorama of the valley of the Chiani below. Castle of CarnaiolaThe small hamlet of Carnaiola was built around the year thousand on the ruins of the old Roman fortification. It guarded the bridge of the “Muro Grosso”, an important hydraulic work that forded the river Chiani and was even studied by Leonardo da Vinci. In the course of the sixteenth century the new castle was built with four bastions and transformed into one of the few patrician palaces outside the walls of the city of Orvieto.Fabro Scalo & ColonnettaColonnetta and Fabro Scalo are more recent centers for commercial and artisan activity located at the foot of the two historical centers (Fabro and Carnaiola). Agriculture, which once was the principal source of income for the territory, still flourishes in the hamlet of Poggiovalle.Truffles from FabroThe territory of Orvieto abounds in truffles: black, white, summer and autumn truffles. Quantities of valuable white truffles, the famous Tuber Magnatum Pico, are hidden underground and a special Trade Fair dedicated to this truffle is held the second weekend of November in the town of Fabro, traditionally the capital of this precious tuber.traditionsCantamaggio fabrese (May festival)Sagra de la torta sotto ‘l foco co’ le salcicce e le rape (Fête with hearth-baked bread, sausages and turnip greens) Pan col mosto (Bread and must) eventsFeast of Saint MartinFeast of the Blessed Vanna of Carnaiola Sacred Heart of Jesus the bandThe band was first founded in 1850. Around 1970 a new group – the band “Anni verdi” – was founded thanks to the enthusiasm of the president of the pro-loco Norberto Maurizi and of the conductor Dino Dini. The group was acclaimed at an important international meeting of music bands in Liege, in Belgium. In the 1990s many young people joined the band and the tradition is now an integral part of the culture of Fabro. |
