About twenty years ago the agronomist Alberto Viganò planted saffron
crocus bulbs from the Valencia district in Spain in his estate in the
area of Città della Pieve. Subsequently a few other local farmers also
planted small plots of saffron crocus.
The Statute of Perugia of 1279 bears witness to the production of saffron in Umbria in the thirteenth century, and therefore also in Castel della Pieve.
Since ancient times the saffron crocus, or Crocus sativa, of Asian origin, has been employed as a dye, a medicine, a cosmetic and for gastronomic uses.
